“Since at least December 2021 what has been important to veteran is to be able to live at home safely getting the medical and caregiver assistance he needs, which has been provided by the VA, and to get “a comfortable mattress that does not make coccyx pressure areas worse”. He had been on a Low Air Loss Mattress for over a year but continued to have a a severely painful bed sore for over 2 years that never really got any better in spite of the low air loss mattress and long term home health wound care. (I sent you pictures of the wound). . All that being said, in January 2023 veteran’s wife contacted the HBPC OT and asked if there was anything else we could do to help heal this veteran’s bed sore. We identified that the problem may have been exacerbated by veteran’s foley tubing, bowel incontinence, and shearing pressure because he had to be frequently pulled up in bed because of the loss of his legs. He also could not really get a restful night’s sleep due to his constant discomfort.
MESA offered veteran the use of a “next level” Non power anti-shear mattress called “The Wiggle” designed to heal wounds for patients with persistent problems with skin pressure. The veteran was able to get his new “Wiggle” in February, and within a week of using it his wife was reporting that veteran was already more comfortable and able to sleep for longer periods of time at night, and the wound seemed to be responding better to the wound care because the shearing problem from having to constantly pulling the veteran up in bed had been eliminated. As of this writing in May 2023, veteran’s wound has healed and has stayed healed since the end of March 2023. The veteran’s wife has been amazed by the mattress’s effectiveness and would probably be more than willing to testifying about “The Wiggle’s” unique healing and comfort properties, and what a difference it has made in her husband’s health and well-being.”
